Naruto Name Pronunciations!
English dubs tend to pronounce names a bit off from the original Japanese versions. I'm not japanese and I'm not trying to show off my knowledge of the language, because I honestly haven't got the patience to learn their language. ^-^; I've just been getting really confused between names of the Japanese and English versions of the show. I figured that other people might be having this problem as well, so here are their names taken from the Japanese version of the show.
Also, the Japanese sound their R's more as the letter D, but it's not as bold as the English dubs have been saying. For example, Sakura's name in Japanese has been said as Sakurda, really fast. The english dub says, slowly and more bold, SakuDa. For the sake of not getting people confused, the D are R's in English. Sakura should really be said as Sakura in English, not SakuDa. Japanese and English have different letter pronunciations, and they should be respected in each language. [I suppose that's just my two cents though. =3]
These can all be debatable, and I'm sure that if you put 5 major fans of Naruto in an empty room to discuss this, there will be many different opinions on how to pronounce everything. Honestly, the reason I'm making this page is because I couldn't find any websites that gave the japanese pronunciations. If you'd like to tell me better pronunciations, go ahead. I won't be mad, and I'll probably change these if yours sound more accurate. ^-^
First name, then last.
I believe in Japanese, the last name is said first, but I'm just going to post the names as we do most often in English.
Underlined parts are emphasized more in the names.
For example, the English dub says Nah-roo-toe, but the correct way to say it is Nah-roo-toe. There are some parts I didn't emphasize because I didn't think it was much of an issue, but if anybody has trouble, please don't be afraid to e-mail me. ^-^
Naruto Uzumaki:
Nah-roo-toe Oo-zoo-mah-key
Sasuke Uchiha:
Sauce-kay Oo-chi-ha
Sakura Haruno:
Sah-koo-rah Ha-roo-no
Kakashi Hatake:
Kah-ka-shi Ha-tah-kay (although there has been much confusion to whether it's Kaka-shi or Kah-kashi, Naruto says Kah-ka-shi)
Ino Yamanaka:
Ee-no Ya-mah-na-ka
Shikamaru Nara:
Shee-ka-mah-roo Nah-ra
Chouji Akimichi:
Chew-jey Ah-key-me-chi
Iruka Umuino:
Ee-roo-kah Oo-moo-ee-no
Kiba Inuzuka:
Key-bah Ee-new-zoo-ka
Akamaru:
Ah-ka-mah-roo
Dosu:
Doe-soo
Jutsu:
Joot-soo
